How To Create Meaning In A Film (Part 2)

Long Take

Definition:

In filmmaking, a long take is a shot with a duration much longer than the conventional editing pace either of the film itself or of films in general.

Creating Meaning:

  • Long takes might show off a stunning environment or immerse you in a character's plight, but at their heart, the method keeps you glued to the screen by allowing you to observe every movement without interruption.

  • The character long takes should “make the viewer feel like the subject.”

  • The plot-long take allows the audience to see a variety of actions and occurrences in one scene, which will help to inform the rest of the story.

Short Take

Definition:

A short take might be one or two seconds long, although contemporary films continue to use shorter and shorter takes of less than a single second.

Creating Meaning:

  • Gives audiences access to topics and issues they otherwise would not know about.

  • Usually edited tightly and well, and stay entertaining throughout the entire length of the short take.

  • Focuses on what scene can possibly not be as important as other scenes.

Example: Live photos

Slow Motion

Definition

The action of showing a film or playing back video more slowly than it was made or recorded, so that the action appears slower than in real life.

Creating Meaning:

  • Allows suspense to build as the viewers wait for the climax of the action to happen. This buildup of suspense will encourage the viewer to pay closer attention to the video than they would if it happened at regular speed.
  • Portrays events more clearly, When watching events that are high in speed such as a sports event slowing down the frames per second can help the viewer detect and see events they would have otherwise never seen if the video was going on at regular speed.

Post-Production

Definition:

Work done on a film or recording after filming or recording has taken place.

Creating Meaning:

  • Enhances the quality of the film

  • It Lets the audience know the type of film director working

  • Includes: edits, sound, music, visual effects, color, and more. With all of these parts combined, it can create a scene full of emotion and meaning.

  • Post-Production completes the look. Without editing certain emotions can not be portrayed or emphasized, certain events would look meaningless and dull.
